Joining the EU

The process of joining the European Union for Bulgaria was long, with a beginning in 1990 when the state declared its will to become a part of the EU and a considerable follow up step in 1993 when the EU adopted the Copenhagen criteria, which the candidate-states had to cover. Details about the route that led to Bulgaria becoming a member in 2007 are presented here.

On January 1st, 2007 Bulgaria joined the European Union.[1]
